Duke of Gloucester and Loyalty to Edward IV

1471 – Richard fights at the Battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury
At age 18, Richard proves himself on the battlefield, helping to crush the Lancastrian resistance. He is rewarded with the title Duke of Gloucester.

1472 – Marriage to Anne Neville
Richard marries Anne Neville, the younger daughter of the Earl of Warwick and widow of Edward of Westminster (son of Henry VI). Their union solidifies his political position and grants him wealth and estates in the north.

1475–1480 – Lord of the North
Richard is entrusted with governing the north of England, notably Yorkshire and Northumberland. His administration is seen as fair and just by many in the region.

1480–1482 – Scottish campaign
Richard leads a military expedition into Scotland and captures Berwick-upon-Tweed, enhancing his reputation as a capable commander.

Seizure of the Throne


9 April 1483 – Death of Edward IV
Edward IV dies suddenly, leaving his 12-year-old son Edward V as heir. Richard is named Lord Protector for his nephew.

26 June 1483 – Richard usurps the throne
After a series of political maneuvers and arrests of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s allies, Richard declares Edward IV’s children illegitimate due to a pre-contract of marriage. He takes the crown for himself and becomes King Richard III.

6 July 1483 – Coronation of Richard III
Richard is crowned in a grand ceremony at Westminster Abbey. His wife Anne Neville is crowned queen beside him. shutdown123
